Write Up:There were four people on the Grotto Canyon hike. The weather on Friday was beautiful with
blue skies and scattered clouds. We started at 10:am and the temperature rose to about 19C,
which was perfect. The Canyon trail was as anticipated very stoney underfoot with occasional
stream crossings. The water level was very low about an inch where we did need to cross. Very
few other hikers on the trail. The canyon had lots to offer. Its a dramatic steep gorge with a little
ice to cross in one point , but not really slippery. For those inclined there was a small scramble
up to a waterfall. Half way up we the canyon veered left through a very narrow gorge. Here there
were a number of rock climbers. After a short distance the canyon opened up to a garden of
inukshuks. From there we carried on up the wider canyon full of interesting boulders and rocks
some with apparent fossils on them. Further up there were sone half formed hoodoos and then a
cave. A little further on we stopped at an enticing rock ledge in the shade, where we had lunch.
We then returned to the car park the same way. In total it was about 8km and we spect about 4
hrs on the trail. We all enjoyed it and there was lots to and discover.
