Write Up:
A crossing of the chilly West Castle river started today's adventure. Then it was up through forest to some cloudy/misty views towards the Castle Mtn ski resort. At the top of Barnaby ridge we again entered forest and followed a lovely trail to a small waterfall right before the first lake. Around the lake and up again with a view of a much larger waterfall announced our arrival at a very 'atmospheric' (aka misty) second lake. Four of us ventured through the mist to check out the rock wall between the upper lakes. Lunch was back at the first lake. Murphy's law meant that the skies started clearing as we headed back down the trail to some lovely views of the Castle valley. The water crossing at the end of the trail didn't seem so chilly in the afternoon ;-) A return visit to check out the lakes on a sunny day is definitely in order. This also looks like it would be a lovely larch hike. 11.6km round trip with 677m of cumulative elevation gain.
