Write Up:It was a perfect day for a hike at Dry Island Buffalo Jump. We met
at 10 am at the top of the escarpment overlooking the Red Deer river
valley below. The sun was shining and the morning air was a cool 12
degrees celcius. We waited for a couple of stragglers who, we
thought had not arrived, but we soon discovered that they had
already driven into the valley below and we soon met up with them
there.
This is such an unusual landscape to hike in and John McFaul
expertly guided us through the hoodoos and coulees explaining the
origins of the geology and the plants and birdlife along the way. We
spent time looking for dinosaur bone fragments and watching the
Turkey Vultures soar the thermals above our heads. Louise found a
great dinosaur bone fragment which had washed down from the hills
above us. We had lunch on a bluff overlooking the Red Deer river and
then made our way back to the cars and a wade in the cool water of
the Red Deer river. Susan
had a cooler with watermelon and cold drinks which were enjoyed by
