8 hikers were fortunate enough to enjoy good weather on this challenging 20 km trek. After easily treading a low-elevation trail, our first ascent of the day was to Little Ware to preview our route. From there we dropped down off this rocky summit with an unexpected 360 degree panorama, crossed through a pine forest, and summited Mount Ware in time for lunch. Views of Blue Rock Mountain immediately to the west were spectacular. From this wind-exposed high point, we dropped down to the grassy saddle with Surveyor's Ridge and gradually climbed up to similarly stunning viewpoints to get close-up views of Mount Rose and Three Point Mountain to the west. All along this ridge were prolific patches of Crocuses. We also saw Shooting Stars, Forget-me-nots, Scorpionweed, and other wildflowers. After bidding farewell to our final views of the front range mountains from our foothills vantage point, we completed our loop by following a series of trails & cutlines until we hooked up with Volcano Ridge trail and followed it back to the cars. Though all were weary after completing this journey, it was the kind of tiredness that is tolerable because it is accompanied by a great sense of accomplishment and gratitude to have been fortunate enough to experience K-country at its best. It felt like Mount Ware and Surveyor's Ridge was the perfect hike for us to do at this time of year. Brian P.
