Coliseum Mountain dominates the local landscape and looks like a real challenge with 500m of elevation gain in the first 5.5km but the trail consists of very well graded switchbacks (11 of them) through the forest. When you break out of the trees the view of 'the cap' on the north end of the mountain makes it worth the climb. From there we made our way around the curving ridge of the 'coliseum' to the top of the cap - amazing 360 views! As we had started on trail at 9am we were able to enjoy the peace at the top before the Saturday hordes started arriving. Total stats were - 15km, cumulative elevation of 835m and 6 hours on trail (moving time was 4hr50). A fabulous hike and the weather didn't disappoint either :-)
