For the Monday of a holiday weekend we headed south then west of Millarville to escape the crowds. And we did. The weather probably had a lot to do with that too. It was overcast most of the day but pleasant enough until we came out of the trees for the final grunt up Mesa Butte. The strong wind was very cold and with fresh snow on the ground we didn't linger long over half a lunch at the top. The second half of the loop was like hiking on a different day - no wind and relatively warm ;-) Trail conditions were a mix of wet, dry and mud with snow higher up. A great training hike as we ascended and descended several times on the first half of the loop. A 10km hike with 470m of cumulative elevation. Naming Note - the trail is named after George William (Curley) Sand, from Minnesota who was hired to track, with his hounds, cougars and grizzlies that were killing yearlings. In 2 years he killed 11 grizzlies and many black bears - or so the story goes.
