Write Up:
The Highwood has its own unique charm and challenges. We enjoyed the former and overcame the latter. After fording the Highwood River we joined a cutline, which was our access route up Odlum Creek Valley. The cutline was generally in good shape but with sections overgrown with alder. After about 3 km we left the cutline and climbed up near- vertical grassy slopes to a shoulder. Upon reaching the main ridge we turned west and followed the ridge over three lovely alpine peaks separated by deep cols. The ridge fell to the north in vertical cliffs while sloping to the south more gently in meadows. Golden larches under blue skies added color to the scenery. After climbing the West peak we left the ridge and descended into the drainage below. While the drainage was crisscrossed by many game trails, which we followed, they all petered out sooner or later. Upon reaching the cutline we made a dash back and managed to reach our cars just before the darkness set in. Peter Minarik
