We had a perfect day for hiking, mainly sunny with temperatures in the high teens. This trail is accessed from the large open area immediately below the Big Beehive. You head into the trees in the opposite direction from the short, well travelled route to the Big Beehive. Don't be deterred by the large log set across the entrance. Very shortly after entering the trees you make a sharp right turn at an intersection with rocks and tree branches blocking the wrong trail. You then ascend to the rock bands at the base of a cliff (if you miss the turn, as we did, you'll know because you'll stay in the trees on a narrow trail that runs a ways below the cliff base). A good trail follows the cliff base around to the back side to a steep dirt and scree slope. You ascend the slope to a col and turn right for a short ascent to the summit of the Devil's Thumb. The views of the surrounding area are superb.
