We pulled into the overflow parking lot just east of Lake Louise to be greeted by friendly park staff who directed us where to park. We boarded the waiting coach which shuttled us to the Morraine Lake Parking lot. Once all hikers had collected at the parking lot, others shared rain ponchos and gloves to ensure all participants were warm enough to start our adventure in the rain around 10:15 A.M. The rain soon turned to light snow but we trudged along without the usual delight of seeing the brilliant colour of Morraine Lake at rest breaks. We departed the crowd of other Larch Valley hikers at the Eiffel Lake turn off. Spotting of quite fresh scat encourgaged us to maintain our togetherness as a group As the snow dissapated, we hoped for the sun to peak through and shed its light on the lightly snow dusted mountains and the larches. It was not to be and it was quite windy once we neared the lake so we found shelter amongst the rocks. A patch of blue sky was seen peeking through but no real sunshine. No helicopter bearing Star Bucks or Tim Horton's coffee or offering airlift arrived so after a short lunch and fortified by a bit of chocholae, we headed back down the trail. The backdrop was spectacular and the air fresh. On our descent, the weatehr improved and we were rewarded with the dazzling colour of Morraine Lake. We all arrived safely down around 3:30. Despite rain, snow and wind, I believe the group had a great day in the mountains.
