Write Up:
Seventeen hikers enjoyed a beautiful day roaming the ridges and meadows around the Sparrowhawk Tarns. The trail starts across the road from the Sparrowhawk parking lot on the Smith-Dorrien highway and is well-defined all the way to the meadows just below the tarns. The trail climbs steadily for the first 1 km and then levels off for another 1.5-2 km before the final accent to the ridge overlooking the first (and largest) "tarn" (Daffern calls this a "sink lake"). From there we headed SE on a trail toward the tarns in the bowl just below Red Ridge. After lunch the group split with some hikers heading north to explore for a tarn below Mt. Bogart (never found it) and then back to the "sink lake" along a scenic ridge that provided excellent views of the Goat Range and Spray Lakes to the west. The remainder of the group headed back down the meadows below Red Ridge to meet up with the group coming along the ridge above the lake. The total hiking time was approximately 6 hours.
