Write Up:
The rarely-hiked trail from the north offered good contrast to our descent route, the popular trail from the south. The lower slopes had been logged out ten years ago but the logging actually improved the hiking experience. A new interpretive trail was built through the cut blocks. Walking the interpretive trail, views were open in all directions and underfoot flowers grew in profusion, particularly wood lilies. Above the cut blocks we followed a wide old road where moderate hills alternated with flat sections and the road felt soft under our feet. The walk was through mature forest but we caught occasionally glimpses of the peaks and ridges above. The trail was overgrown with alders around KM 8, but otherwise was in very good shape. The initial section was poorly marked and I had to consult Daffern's book for guidance. Elizabeth set a good pace but everybody was able to keep up. We reached the pass after two hours and fifty minutes of hiking. The descent took us one hour and fifteen minutes. The weather was cloudy but pleasant with no wind. We only met two bikers on the north side and two hikers on the south side. The north side showed also signs of horse traffic. The car shuttle (to the other parking lot and back) took about 15 minutes and we were back in town at 3:30. Peter Minarik
