Write Up:
A trail through a logged-out area and a cutline brought us to a hot, rocky creek bed that we followed to the south ridge of Belmore Brown Peak. The hike up the south ridge can be summarized as steep, steeper, and even steeper. Belmore Browne Peak has two summits and we had to use our hands to climb the West summit. From Belmore Brown Peak we walked along a scenic ridge south toward Tiara Peak. The ridge had three summits with significant elevation gain. The middle summit was guarded by vertical cliffs. Although it was possible to go around, it was more fun for us to climb the cliffs straight up on good, solid rock, with one difficult spot. When we reached the cliffs of Tiara Peak we traversed to the back side across steep slopes of scree and slab. The first traverse was the most unpleasant with poor footing on an intermittent sheep trail. The back side of Tiara Peak was mostly a steep scree slope. There was a short scrambly section near the bottom, with mild exposure. We crossed a slabby gully, climbed a small cliff and scrambled up a couple of metres of unstable scree on slab, with a significant drop-off below. As I was trying to climb up, the scree was pulling me down toward the drop-off. A cold wind blew on the summit so we didn’t linger. We retraced our steps to the north side of Tiara Peak and descended a rather pleasant gully and a grassy rib to the right. Eventually we reached our ascent gully and completed the loop. Peter Minarik
