Write Up:
The sign at the trailhead strongly discourages but does not prohibit people from using the trail. This makes the trail more enjoyable for those who venture in as it prevents overcrowding. We did not see any signs of bear activity or any animals along the trail but on the drive in we managed to observe a juvenile grizzly feeding on the succulent grasses on the side of the road, as well as numerous deer and sheep. After a short stint through a pleasant mature forest we followed a rocky ridge at the edge of the eastern escarpment where the hot morning sun made us sweat. We were rewarded with great views across the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes. We detoured to a viewpoint at the end of the former official trail to give our feet the flat feeling, which was lacking on this trail. The next section led through open subalpine forest with larches and fields of yellow glacier lilies. The trail, which was made by the passage of many feet, gains elevation quickly and can be best described as “very steep and even more steep.” We ended on a rocky rib with a gully to its left below the summit cliffs. Because the usual way was blocked by a snowfield, a remnant of a cornice, we climbed the cliff to the right of the snow, searching carefully for small holds and steps for our hands and feet. Everyone got to the summit, where we enjoyed a view of valleys and peaks that one does not normally see from any other place. On the way back we selected a different route down the summit cliffs that lead us directly to the rocky rib below. This cliff, though higher than our ascent cliff, was made easier for down climbing by slabs. Past the cliffs, we descended at a relaxed pace, taking in the views, and discussing a number of topics.
