Write Up:
Our small group of three men and two ladies settled into John’s SUV for the nearly 3-hour drive to Saskatchewan River Crossing. We listened on his Sirius satellite radio to the songs and dancing music from the bygone era when we were young. The hike was on a good, well-maintained trail with a return distance of 18 km. We crossed the North Saskatchewan River at the narrows and looked down on the milky water rushing through the rapids below our feet. We arrived at a bluff overlooking the Howse River where Parks Canada strategically placed two red chairs with a connecting side table for food and drink. We observed this historic route that the early explorers and fur traders used to get across the Rockies. We veered away from the river and followed a bubbling brook up a hill before traversing over a low ridge and down to the lake, a large body of water under the Continental Divide. At the lake we sat on a sandy beach, listened to the waves beating against the shore and watched the glaciated mountains across the lake. We did not see signs of bears or any other large animals. We saw a grouse and a woodpecker who took an interest in one particular tree and drilled several big holes into it, producing a pile of wood shavings in the process. We stopped at Lake Louise for supper and came back home very late. Thanks to everyone for coming on the hike. Peter
