Itinerary:
We’ll begin on the Hwy #546 at the Park Gate, as the highway is closed at this time of year until May 15th. There is parking around the park gate. After a 1 km walk along the highway, we veer off to the right through a deciduous forest. This is a nice moderate loop of 10 km, which quickly takes you up to nice views across the sheep valley. The elevation gain is 293m. We come down from the top though mixed treed forest, turning onto the Windy Point Trail to follow a small creek back to the highway. There we will cross the highway to follow the Sheep Trail, returning to the point where we began to hike off the road. A 1km walk takes us back to our cars. Along the hike we may encounter some tree blow down, which reports say are easy to go around. As well, we will have snow covered trails and may encounter icy and/or muddy conditions – there has been fresh snow over the past week, so water resistant footwear and spikes are a must. Poles are nice but optional. At this point in time the weather looks like it is a start temp of -7/-8 and a high of +3 degrees with a mix of sun and cloud. Depending on how log we stop for lunch, it will take 3 1/2 or more hours.
