It's a landscape of windswept prairie
grass, wide-open vistas, and infinite skies. Here
you can see the Bison roam as they have for
thousands of years. Bring your binoculars there is
plenty to see. You may be lucky enough to see a
Burrowing Owl as I did last year.
This will be our 3rd year
visiting Grasslands National
Park in Southern Saskatchewan. In previous years
we visited the West Block of Grasslands. This year,
after expressions of interest from members, we will
offer a visit to the East Block of the park. The
East Block is more remote and accommodations can
only be found in the park campground at Rock Creek. But
you don’t have to pitch a tent. Louise and I
have stayed in the Parks Canada oTentik’s
which are permanent cabin structures that can sleep
6 (I recommend 4 people for a little elbow room).
There are BBQ’s, an enclosed, modern cooking
and meeting building, and even WIFI!
There are numerous
hiking trails and I’ll be looking into
arranging a Parks Canada interpretive hike and
fossil hunt.
And when the sun goes down and the pink
glow on the horizon fades, you are treated to the
most awesome stargazing in North America. The trip
is four nights and a travel day on Sept. 29th.
