Itinerary:

I would ask that anyone who signs up for this hike has at least been double vaccinated against Covid. Fingers crossed that there isn't too much of the 'white rain' tomorrow because this trail was almost dry a month ago! There are a couple of steep climbs to get to the top of Mesa Butte where some route finding will be required to join the Mesa Back Door trail. There are many downed trees at the top which we will have to clamber over, under and around. After descending Mesa butte we will climb to the top of Humpty's Hill before rejoining the Back Door route to the Mesa Traverse trail. One more big-ish climb to get us back to our vehicles. If conditions are suitable I'd like to add on an extra 1.5km and an ascent to the top of Jill's Hill for a 12km day. This route will avoid most of the mud that is common on the Well Road trail. 4 1/2-5 hours on trail.

Note - this is not where we usually start this hike from! Drive past the North Fork recreation area. Mesa Butte recreation area and equestrian campground is approx 19km from Millarville, or approx 5km from the start of the gravel on highway 549. The trailhead is a pullout on the right hand side of the road across from the equestrian campground. Google maps recognises Mesa Butte Recreation Area
