Write Up:We started the hike in -3 temperatures, with the pathways covered with about 5 cm of fresh snowfall. The skies were sunny with some cloud. Hiking westward from Bebo Grove parking lot we took the paved pathways primarily until we reached Shannon Terrace, where we took the pathway through the woods to the bridge which crosses Fish Creek. Here we took the paved pathway up the big hill, our microspikes coming in handy for grip. Generally what ice we had to contend with today came from areas where the parks snowplow had cleared the snow and melting had begun. We followed the top of the ridge along to the Marshall Springs parking lot, catching great views of the park below. By noon the sunny was fully shining and temps above 0, so we were taking off layers of clothing. We deaked down along the south side of the storm pond as we continued east and back up again along the terrace, where we found a beautiful lunch/snack spot overlooking Fish Creek and the park below. We followed the steep path downward and turned east to the storm pond just before Votier’s Flats. Long this part of the path we looked at the Beaver activity: a large dam by bridge #7 and two large beaver huts at the perimeter of the pond. Parks had rigged drainage through one dam to manage the drainage of the pond. At this point we headed back west to Bebo Grove parking lot, taking a couple of side paths on route to follow the river and take a closer look at the Raven Rocks. We got back to the car about an hour later than anticipated (3:36 total time; moving time 2:47), having done 11.26 km with a elevation gain of 259m. A beautiful day, smiles all around!
