Write Up:16 people joined in for part or all of the Radium Area and Kootenay National Park hiking event. We did 7 hikes in total over the 5 days: Susan Korba coordinated 2 easy rated hikes - Marble Canyon from the Paint Pots on Sunday and Juniper Redstreak Loop on Tuesday; Susan Chalier coordinated a difficult rated exploratory hike on Tuesday to Kindersley Pass; Kate coordinated a moderate rated hike to Stanley Glacier on Sunday and a moderate to difficult rated hike to the Bumpy Meadows and Pedley Pass (doing Pedley Ridge as well); Helen Whitson coordinated a moderate rated hike called The Johnson; and Shelley Lunney coordinated an easy rated hike to Cobb Lake. We held a happy-hour on Sunday and Monday at the Piccadilly, gathering at the outdoor BBQing area on the property. It was a great space to convene in – a partially covered deck with picnic tables and chairs for our use. During happy-hour we made hiking plans for Tuesday and Wednesday, while enjoying snacks everyone brought to share with their drink of choice.
The weather during the 5 days was somewhat unsettled/Spring-like. We experienced a range of temperatures from single digits to low 20’s; a mixture of sun and cloud, rain and snow showers. We were fortunate that the Radium area experienced a significant warming trend before our arrival, so there was snowmelt/drying of trails on the more accessible trails. However, there were still quite a few areas we could not get into due to snow and high water levels – e.g. July 10th is the soonest hikers will be able to access the Lake of the Hanging Glacier trail. We also came to an understand that in order to get into some of the popular trails an AWD and high clearance vehicle is necessary, as well as allowing for the time it takes to drive rough forestry road to the trailhead. We tested this requirement driving 22 km into the Pedley Pass/Ridge trailhead.
Folks expressed interest to revisit the area again next year, choosing a time period in which we can access some hikes such as Diana Lake, Lake of the Hanging Glacier and the Welsh Lakes. We also want to complete the loop of Kindersley Pass and Sinclair Creek, leaving cars on each end of the trail to shuttle folks.
