Write Up:
Plan B turned out to be a beautiful hike. We set off from the Burstall Pass trailhead on a very chilly morning! After approx 3.5km we made a left turn and started climbing fairly steeply up through the forest. There was snow on the trail but less than expected and we hiked without microspikes. On crossing the creek the views started to open up. Another steepish climb through larches led us to the meadow below Piggy Plus Col. The views across the Burstall Pass valley are stunning - Mt Birdwood, Pig's Tail (aka the Shark's Tooth) and Commonwealth Peak dominated the skyline. We enjoyed lunch in the sun before donning our spikes for the hike back down. Eagle eyed Amy had spotted a mountain goat on the way up and we all saw it again on our descent, then we almost trod on two spruce grouse who were so well camouflaged that they blended into the main trail. The James Walker cirques will have to wait until next year now. Stats 12km with 530m of cumulative elevation.
