Write Up:A hardy bunch set out on a chilly morning to head to Barnaby and
Southfork Lakes. There was light rain in the air as we set out and
fresh snow on the mountaintops.
We climbed that doozy of a hill again!, and this time continued up the
steep windswept slope to the shelter of the trees. After some ups and
downs on a lovely forest trail we found the gold that we seeked - the
golden larches!
There were larches in profusion at Barnaby lake. We hiked through
them up to the two Southfork Lakes. It was definitely winter on the
rock dam between the two lakes so we didn't linger instead heading
back down to the beautiful larches to have a quick lunch in the
shelter of the trees by Barnaby lake.
The sun did poke it's head through the clouds as we came out of the
forest so we enjoyed glorious views across the valley and towards the
Castle ski area.
This was a fabulous larch hike where we saw no-one else on trail all
day except one woman and her dog on our return trip.
A strong group of hikers completed the 11.6km trail with 701m of
cumulative elevation in just under 5 hours including our breaks.
