Write Up:We had a wonderful day in the Sheep River Valley section of
Kananaskis. After many days of rain we were blessed with favourable
weather for our hike to Little Ware peak. 13 PMH hikers and 2 guests
assembled at the Gorge Creek day use parking lot at 10 am and we began
our hike shortly thereafter. The hike follows Gorge Creek and after
approximately 2 hours, climbs very steeply through the pine forest to
an open col and soonafter Little Ware summit. We
reached the summit by 12:45 pm and had lunch. Just after our lunch and
our group
peak portrait we saw a juvenile black bear foraging in the meadow
below us. We got back to out cars by 3:10pm and on the drive back we
pulled over when, at the highway crossing at Foran Grade on the slopes
above the highway, we saw a mother black bear and her three cubs
foraging in the grass. Thanks to everyone for making the hike so
enjoyable and to Susan Chalier for co-coordinating the hike with me.
The tracked statistics for this hike were 13 km and 475 m elevation
gain.
