Write Up:
The day on Pocaterra ridge started at 8 45 am after leaving the city at 7 am and dropping a car at Little Highwood Park lot. We started the hike at the Big Highwood pass and into the meadow we travelled. The sky was somewhat clear toward the ridge for awhile and then the smoke set in. We reached the first steep climb at 10: 30 and then we arrived on the ridge. The views were beautiful and were obscured by the smoke. This was disappointing. However, we had a delightful day. We encountered German tourists, and a dad and his 8-year-old son who was scampering along. There is a variety of different terrain- forests, meadows, rocky long ridge with panoramic scenery. The trail in the down parts has been eroded badly and is slippery and requires one to be cautious. Poles absolutely are an asset. The last part in the forest below has many braided trails about the stream, and we came out north of the parking lot. There were few cars in both parking lots. We arrived in the park lot at 3 :30 pm. Thanks for coming out everyone and we had a great group for the day. It was a warm day. Estimation is 11 km and 740 m. A hike worth the car shuttle and a definite return on clearer days.
