Write Up:This trail offered both the feeling and experience of civilization
and true Canadian wilderness. The feeling of civilization came from a
well-designed and well maintained trail, with a large number of
people going up and down. The wilderness experience came from ancient
trees standing tall or scattered on the ground by the force of
nature. The untamed streams, lakes, and peaks reaching to the sky in
all directions. The signs of bears recently digging for roots in the
meadows below the pass. The first four kilometers were an easy walk
near Galatea Creek, with many bridges to cross. The trail became more
demanding as it rose to Lillian Lake but the real hard work started
above Lillian Lake. The newly built trail to Guinn’s Pass traversed
from Lower Galatea Lake between the trees below and the cliffs above
to a windswept and bare pass.
We had a well-deserved break at Lillian Lake, sitting on benches at
the shore both on the way up and down, but our happiness was somewhat
spoiled by aggressive wasp-like insect, which fortunately did not
bite. We enjoyed a s short-sleeve weather, with jackets required only
at the start of the hike and at the pass. It took us 4 hours and 10
minutes to reach the pass, three
hours to
get down, with a 50 min lunch at the pass, for a total of eight
