A smoke-free day! A cool start (7C) warmed up to 20 C by mid-afternoon, so great conditions for the hike. At the entrance to the amphitheatre we took the right (southeast) trail up the side of the cirque to get an overview, looking down into the valley below. This is also the route to the top of Cascade Mountain, and we stopped for lunch at 2199 m where a couple of trails went steeply down into the cirque below: Maureen went up a little further to get the some photos of the amphitheatre and the view also up towards the Elk Pass (please check the photo album in the coming days ...) The hike covered about 15 km, with 761 m of total elevation gain. One unusual experience was a Comma (synonym Angelwings) butterfly soaking up the salt from my wrist, totally unaware of efforts to photograph it. I mistook it for a fritillary at first, as the colours are very similar on the upper side of their wings. One last thing: I should have been clearer about the destination being the look-out over the cirque, rather than it's floor - something to check out next the hike is advertised!
