Write Up:Despite a weather forecast indicating there would be a very light shower around 9:00 am and a
bit more rain in the pm, there was a light mist to drizzle the whole day. This did not deter the five
hikers from trudging through a creek, starting the morning off with wet feet, and then another
creek, reinforcing the wetness. The trip toward the ridges that form the Horseshoe traversed
through wet meadows, and, up and down old logging roads until we were in the open and began
our ascent up the first ridge. We crossed grassy ridges till we came to a more rocky one. The
valleys were filled with mist, making the view quite ethereal. We chose to cross lower on the
ridge as the wetness made the rocky trail quite slippery. At the end of this ridge, we lost our
bearings, being unable to see our destination because it was obscured by mist. We decided to
return to our starting point, rather than continuing the loop. We arrived back at our vehicles
soaked, but very impressed that we had enjoyed the hike. We all stated we would like to try to
complete the whole loop next year, and hopefully in drier weather.
